India Unveils First Hydrogen Train
India is set to enter a new era of green transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered passenger train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the country’s first hydrogen train on July 17 in Haryana, marking a major step towards sustainable railway development.
The pilot project has been developed by Indian Railways using advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology. Unlike conventional diesel trains, the hydrogen-powered train does not release smoke or harmful emissions and produces only water vapour, making it an environment-friendly mode of transport.
The hydrogen train has been designed with a seating capacity of 682 passengers and can accommodate around 2,600 people. The project is part of Indian Railways’ ambitious plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 by adopting clean energy solutions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Haryana was selected for the pilot project as the Railways aims to test the performance and efficiency of hydrogen technology in passenger services. The initiative is expected to pave the way for wider adoption of hydrogen-powered trains across the country in the future.
The launch of the hydrogen train highlights India’s focus on innovation, renewable energy and environmentally responsible transportation systems.
