Accurate Disaster Prediction Key to Saving Lives: R.P. Sisodiya
Accurate prediction of disasters is the foundation of effective disaster management and plays a crucial role in protecting lives and property, said R.P. Sisodiya, Special Chief Secretary to the Government, Industries & Commerce (Handlooms & Textiles), while addressing Probationary Deputy Collectors (PDCs) undergoing induction training at the Andhra Pradesh Human Resource Development Institute (APHRDI), Mangalagiri.
Delivering a lecture on disaster preparedness and response, Sisodiya said predicting a disaster's timing, duration and intensity enables authorities to plan ahead and significantly reduce its impact. He stressed that advance mobilisation of manpower, equipment and essential resources is vital for efficient disaster response. Preparedness, he noted, must begin long before disasters strike through robust planning, reliable early warning systems and effective communication with people living in vulnerable regions.
He highlighted that post-disaster operations, including rescue, relief, rehabilitation and restoration, are equally important in helping affected communities recover quickly. Sisodiya emphasised the need for seamless coordination among the Central Government, State Government, district administrations and various line departments to ensure swift and effective emergency response.
Underscoring the growing role of technology, he advocated the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), satellite-based monitoring, advanced telecommunications and drones for disaster prediction, real-time monitoring, damage assessment, search and rescue operations, and efficient relief distribution. He said technology-driven governance has significantly strengthened India's disaster management capabilities.
Drawing on Andhra Pradesh's experience in handling natural calamities, Sisodiya discussed the recent Vijayawada floods, highlighting key challenges and lessons in flood management. He also reviewed the State's preparedness for cyclones, floods and droughts, stressing the importance of contingency planning and coordinated action.
Recalling his experience as Special Officer for the Godavari Pushkaram, Sisodiya said meticulous planning, inter-departmental coordination and effective crowd management were instrumental in ensuring the smooth conduct of the massive religious event. The session was part of the 12-week induction programme for eight Probationary Deputy Collectors, aimed at strengthening their administrative leadership and disaster management capabilities.
