Centre Eyes 15% Isobutanol Blend
The Central government is planning to allow 15% isobutanol blending in diesel as part of its efforts to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and promote cleaner, domestically produced biofuels. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the proposal is under active consideration, following the nationwide rollout of ethanol-blended petrol.
According to Gadkari, isobutanol offers several advantages over ethanol, including higher energy density, lower water absorption and better compatibility with diesel engines. The move is expected to reduce fuel imports, lower emissions and create additional income opportunities for farmers by boosting demand for biofuel feedstocks.
The government will conduct further testing and consultations with automobile manufacturers before implementing the proposal. Industry experts say the blend could improve sustainability without significantly affecting engine performance or fuel efficiency. If approved, the initiative would mark another major step in India's transition toward cleaner and more self-reliant transportation fuels.
