Mavigan: Jagan's New Pickle

“Another twist from Mavigan… Jagan’s new idea.” YSR Congress Party chief and former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has once again stirred controversy over the Andhra Pradesh capital issue. While opposing Amaravati as the capital earlier, he has now proposed a new idea called “Mavigan.” Despite the party’s crushing defeat in elections, YSRCP leaders continue to raise the same issues that allegedly led to their loss. They are also repeating allegations that EVMs were manipulated in favor of the ruling alliance.

Recently, Jagan suggested that constructing Amaravati would cost ₹2 lakh crore, and instead proposed building a capital between Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, and Guntur, naming it “Mavigan.” He claimed this would cost only about 10% of Amaravati’s projected expense, around ₹20,000 crore.

Earlier, before coming to power, Jagan had supported Amaravati and even advocated land pooling in the Assembly. However, after assuming office, he proposed the controversial three-capital model, inspired by other countries. The Assembly even passed the bill for three capitals. During election campaigns, he claimed he would take oath as Chief Minister in Visakhapatnam.

Critics argue that these shifting stands left Andhra Pradesh without a clear capital direction. Even some YSRCP leaders have admitted that the three-capital policy contributed to their electoral defeat. Now, with the introduction of “Mavigan,” political observers are watching closely to see how this new proposal impacts the party’s future.
