IMD Forecasts Below Normal July Rains
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that rainfall across the country may remain below normal during July. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the country is likely to receive around 94% of the long-period average rainfall for July.
The long-term average rainfall for July during 1971–2020 stands at 280.4 mm. The IMD noted that rainfall deficiency was already recorded in June, with the country witnessing around 40% less rainfall than normal. Central India experienced the highest deficit at about 50.4%.
Officials said the rainfall situation will be closely monitored as the monsoon progresses. The forecast has raised concerns among farmers and various sectors dependent on adequate rainfall. The IMD will continue to provide updates based on changing weather conditions.
