Court Grants SIT Custody of CI

A Vijayawada court on Thursday granted the Special Investigation Team (SIT) eight days of police custody of suspended Circle Inspector (CI) Nagaraju in connection with the alleged custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna.

The SIT had sought 12 days of custody for detailed interrogation, but the court permitted questioning for eight days. As per the order, the interrogation will take place from Friday, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, in the presence of Nagaraju's lawyer. The court also directed the SIT to audio and video record the entire process and submit the recordings after the interrogation concludes.

Nagaraju, who was arrested on June 23, is currently lodged in Rajamahendravaram Central Jail under judicial remand.

The case gained widespread attention after Sai Krishna's family alleged that he was illegally detained at Krishnalanka Police Station and subjected to custodial torture, leading to his death. They further claimed that police attempted to destroy evidence by cremating his body at an electric crematorium without informing the family or obtaining their consent.

The allegations sparked public outrage and prompted the formation of the SIT. Investigators are expected to use the custody period to examine Nagaraju's alleged role in the custodial death, the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the claims of evidence destruction.
