Ananth Babu Case: Questions Over Justice and Political Silence

RAVI PODILI
The murder case involving YSRCP MLC Anantha Udaya Bhaskar, widely known as Ananth Babu, continues to spark sharp political debate and public concern over the handling of justice in Andhra Pradesh. The case pertains to the alleged murder of his Dalit driver, Subrahmanyam, an incident that earlier shocked the state after reports claimed that the body was allegedly transported and delivered to the victim’s family.
According to police records and earlier admissions, Ananth Babu was arrested after he himself reportedly confessed to the crime during investigation. The case had triggered strong protests from opposition parties at the time, with allegations of political protection and misuse of influence to delay proceedings.
However, nearly two years into the current coalition government’s rule, questions are being raised over the slow pace of investigation. Critics allege that despite being in power, the ruling alliance has not taken decisive action to expedite the case or ensure swift justice for the victim’s family. Even after Supreme Court observations criticizing the progress of the investigation, there has reportedly been limited visible movement on the ground.
Recent developments have further intensified the controversy. Reports suggest that Ananth Babu attempted to influence witnesses by offering money and issuing indirect threats through intermediaries, warning them against giving testimony in court. Following complaints, police reportedly conducted searches at his residence and seized cash. However, the accused allegedly managed to evade arrest again, raising fresh questions about internal lapses.
There are also allegations of police negligence and possible insider leaks, with claims that information about raids may have been passed on in advance. These allegations have not been officially confirmed but have added to the growing suspicion surrounding the case.
Political observers point out that the issue has taken a complex turn due to family and political connections in the region. Ananth Babu is linked to several influential political families in the East Godavari region, which, according to critics, may be contributing to the lack of pressure on authorities.
Opposition parties and rights activists argue that repeated delays undermine public trust in the justice system, especially in a case involving serious allegations of murder and witness intimidation. They also recall that leaders who once strongly protested the incident are now in positions of power, yet remain largely silent on the issue.
With the Supreme Court already expressing dissatisfaction over the investigation, attention is now on whether the state machinery will act decisively or continue to face allegations of inaction in one of the most controversial criminal cases in recent political history.
