Visakha School Reopens After Government Intervention
Visakha Vimala Vidyalayam in Ukkunagaram, Visakhapatnam, has reopened after being revived through the intervention of Education Minister Nara Lokesh. The school, which served generations of students for nearly four decades, was closed in June 2024 after Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) withdrew financial support. Following representations from Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, the minister directed officials to restore the institution and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The school has now been brought under the State Education Department and will be managed on the lines of Visakha Valley School, with the District Collector serving as Chairperson. Visakhapatnam District Collector Abhijit Kishore and MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao formally inaugurated the reopened institution.
The revived school has already enrolled 55 students in UKG and 723 students from Classes 1 to 10. The government has also introduced the ‘Dokka Seethamma’ mid-day meal scheme on campus. Established in 1984 through an agreement between RINL and the RCM Diocese, the institution once catered to around 2,200 students and 100 staff members. Leaders said the reopening restores access to quality education for children of steel plant employees, workers, and nearby communities, giving a new lease of life to a landmark educational institution.
