Shrimp Farmers Allege Price Syndicate

Shrimp farmers across the undivided Krishna and Godavari districts have alleged that a trader syndicate is manipulating procurement prices, pushing the aquaculture sector into a financial crisis during the peak harvest season. Farmers claim that despite rising cultivation costs and disease risks, they are being forced to sell their produce at artificially low prices.

According to farmers, a handful of major traders dominate pricing despite the presence of several purchasing companies. They allege that prices are kept high during the stocking season to encourage investment but are sharply reduced before harvest. Tiger prawn prices have reportedly fallen from ₹750 per kg in March to ₹670, while Vannamei shrimp prices have declined from ₹270 to ₹235 per kg, resulting in significant losses per acre.

Farmers also point to rising feed costs, which have reportedly increased by up to ₹12,000 per tonne, adding to their financial burden. They allege that government directions to reduce feed prices have not been implemented effectively.

Serious allegations have also been made against Fisheries Department officials, with farmers claiming that poor quality certification and inadequate monitoring have allowed traders to dictate prices. They have urged the government to investigate the alleged cartel, ensure transparent pricing, strengthen regulatory oversight, and provide immediate relief to protect the livelihoods of aquaculture farmers.
