Meghalaya CM Condemns Racial Bullying After Delhi Assault
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday condemned a violent assault on two people from India’s Northeast in New Delhi, calling for urgent action against racial bullying and discrimination. Sangma described the incident as “sickening” and emphasized that such attacks cannot be accepted as the new normal.
The incident reportedly occurred near the Saket District Court Complex when a woman from Manipur and her friend from Assam were walking in a park. They were allegedly targeted with derogatory remarks, which escalated into a physical assault when one of the women objected.
Sangma took to social media to express his outrage, highlighting the recurring hostility faced by Northeastern residents in mainland India. He stressed that racial bullying should not be tolerated and urged authorities to act promptly against such crimes.
Delhi police confirmed they are investigating the incident and have contacted the victims. The injured woman was taken to Safdarjung Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend the attackers.
The assault has reignited national concern over racial discrimination against people from the Northeast living in major cities. Community leaders and civil rights groups have called for better protection, greater awareness, and stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the attack, stressing that racism has no place in Indian society and urging a thorough investigation.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges faced by Northeastern residents, who often report harassment and prejudice in urban centers. Leaders and activists are demanding stronger measures to ensure safety, tolerance, and equal treatment for all citizens, regardless of region or ethnicity.
As public debate intensifies, there is growing pressure on authorities in Delhi and across India to implement effective policies and awareness campaigns to prevent such incidents in the future and to uphold the rights and dignity of people from the Northeast.
This assault serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address racial bullying and ensure that all communities in India feel safe and respected.
