Sikkim Tunnel Toll Rises Twenty-Two
The death toll in the Sikkim tunnel accident has risen to 22, with rescue teams recovering the bodies of 22 workers from the hydroelectric project tunnel in Namchi district. Search operations are continuing to trace the remaining three workers who are still missing.
According to officials, 25 workers were inside the tunnel when a landslide caused the entrance to collapse, trapping them underground. Authorities said the situation worsened after a methane gas leak reportedly triggered a powerful explosion inside the tunnel, making rescue operations extremely challenging.
Specialised rescue teams have been working round the clock to remove debris and search for the remaining workers. Officials said every effort is being made to complete the operation safely.
The NHPC announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh for the families of each deceased worker. The Sikkim government will provide ₹4 lakh, while the Central government has announced ₹2 lakh as compensation.
Authorities expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured continued support. The rescue operation remains underway as teams continue searching for the missing workers amid difficult conditions inside the tunnel.
