Israel, Lebanon Sign Peace Pact
Israel and Lebanon have taken a significant step towards ending years of hostilities by signing a US-mediated framework agreement in Washington. The agreement, announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is being described by all three parties as the first step toward achieving lasting peace and stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
The framework was signed by the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the United States in the presence of senior American officials. While the full details of the agreement have not been made public, it is expected to pave the way for further negotiations on security, border arrangements, and the gradual restoration of stability in southern Lebanon. The agreement also envisions a greater role for the Lebanese Armed Forces in areas affected by conflict, alongside continued US mediation.
Both Israel and Lebanon described the signing as a historic first step rather than a final peace treaty, acknowledging that several complex issues remain unresolved. US officials expressed hope that the framework would help reduce tensions, strengthen regional security, and create conditions for a permanent cessation of hostilities. However, challenges remain, particularly with Hezbollah rejecting elements of the proposed framework, making the path to lasting peace uncertain.
