Gold Ring for Every Newborn
The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister Vijay, has announced a unique welfare initiative aimed at supporting newborns and encouraging institutional deliveries across the state. Under the scheme, every baby born in a government hospital will receive a free one-gram gold ring as a gift from the government.
The programme has been named “Thaya Maman Thanga Modhiram Thittam” (Maternal Uncle’s Gold Ring Scheme), reflecting a traditional cultural practice of gifting gold ornaments to newborn children. The state government has already issued a Government Order (GO) for the implementation of the scheme, paving the way for its rollout across Tamil Nadu.
According to official estimates, the government will spend approximately ₹755.83 crore annually to implement the programme. Authorities believe the initiative will benefit lakhs of families every year and further strengthen maternal and child welfare measures in the state.
The scheme is also expected to encourage more expectant mothers to opt for deliveries in government hospitals, thereby improving access to institutional healthcare and reducing maternal and infant health risks. Public health experts have noted that incentives linked to hospital deliveries often contribute to better healthcare outcomes for both mothers and newborns.
The announcement has generated widespread interest and discussion, with many describing it as an innovative welfare measure that combines social support with public health objectives.
