Godavari Floods Impact Polavaram
The Godavari river has turned fierce following heavy inflows from upstream regions, impacting the ongoing works of the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh. Due to the increasing flood levels, authorities lifted all 48 gates of the spillway and released water downstream to manage the situation.
The heavy flood flow caused damage to temporary structures created for project construction activities. Large iron pipes and metal structures installed for project works were reportedly washed away due to the force of the floodwaters. A temporary mud road constructed below the spill channel for transportation of materials was also completely damaged.
Following the damage, movement of vehicles and transportation activities are currently being carried out through the existing road on the spillway. Officials are monitoring the flood situation and assessing the impact on construction arrangements.
The Polavaram project is considered one of India’s major multipurpose irrigation projects, aimed at providing irrigation facilities, drinking water supply and power generation benefits. The authorities are taking steps to restore damaged temporary infrastructure after flood conditions improve.
The sudden rise in the Godavari water levels has highlighted the challenges faced during the construction phase of the major river project, with officials closely watching further developments.
