Kerala Election Results: UDF Returns to Power, LDF Ousted

Kerala’s election results have unfolded largely as predicted, with the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) securing a decisive victory and returning to power. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), which had been in office for two consecutive terms, has been pushed into the opposition after failing to reach the majority mark.

Elections were held for all 140 assembly seats in the state, where 71 seats are required for a simple majority. The LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, had aimed for a historic third consecutive term but fell significantly short of the target. In contrast, the UDF, led by the Congress party, registered a strong performance and crossed the majority mark comfortably, marking a clear shift in voter preference.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) once again failed to make a significant breakthrough in Kerala politics despite extensive campaigning and high-profile efforts.

Kerala has traditionally witnessed a pattern of alternating governments between the LDF and UDF. After briefly breaking this trend in 2021, the LDF is now out of power again, indicating a return to the state’s usual electoral cycle.

Following the results, discussions have intensified within the UDF regarding the next Chief Minister, with senior leaders emerging as potential contenders for the top post.
