Judge Warns Contempt In Excise Case

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma on Thursday warned that contempt proceedings could be initiated against some respondents in the Delhi excise policy appeal case over allegedly defamatory content circulated against her online. During the hearing, the Delhi High Court judge said she could no longer remain silent after “extremely defamatory” and “vicious” material targeting her surfaced in connection with the ongoing case.

Justice Sharma stated that the court had taken serious note of the remarks and indicated that legal action may follow against those responsible. She added that a detailed judicial order on the matter would be issued later in the day. The comments came during proceedings related to the controversial excise policy case, which has remained politically and legally significant due to allegations of corruption and misuse of power.

The judge’s remarks highlight growing concerns within the judiciary over online attacks, misinformation, and attempts to influence court proceedings through social media campaigns and public narratives. Legal experts say contempt proceedings are considered serious measures aimed at protecting the dignity and independence of the judiciary.

The excise policy case has involved several prominent political figures and continues to attract national attention amid ongoing investigations and court hearings in Delhi.
