AP Midwifery Model Gains Global Recognition

Andhra Pradesh's government-led midwifery programme received international recognition at the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Congress 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal, for its innovative approach to improving maternal and newborn healthcare.

The state, the first in India to institutionalise professional midwifery through Government Orders, showcased its comprehensive model covering training, certification, deployment, and independent practice of Nurse Practitioners in Midwifery (NPMs). The initiative focuses on respectful maternity care, reducing unnecessary medical interventions, and ensuring safe childbirth.

Health & Family Welfare Commissioner G. Veerapandian said the recognition validates Andhra Pradesh's commitment to woman-centric maternal healthcare. Director of Health KVN Chakradhar Babu stated that 31 midwifery educators have been trained, while 120 nurses have completed the 18-month competency-based programme and are serving in public health facilities across the state.

Currently, a third batch of 113 nurses, mainly for tribal areas, is undergoing training at specialised centres in Srikakulam, Kurnool, Nellore, and Kakinada. Additionally, 173 more trainees are being trained across six State Midwifery Training Institutes.

Officials said the programme has strengthened childbirth services through evidence-based practices, continuous mentoring, and enhanced autonomy for midwives. The initiative, supported by UNICEF and the Fernandez Foundation, is now being considered as a model for replication in other states and globally.
