Moviegoer Wins Case Against BookMyShow
A Hyderabad-based movie enthusiast won a consumer court case against BookMyShow after a scheduled movie screening was cancelled without prior notice. Narayanan Kutty Gopalakrishnan had booked a ticket for the Barroz screening on January 1, 2025, at a multiplex in Lulu Mall, Kukatpally. However, upon reaching the theatre, he discovered that the show had been cancelled and another film was being screened instead.
Claiming that neither the ticketing platform nor the theatre management informed him about the cancellation, he approached the consumer court. During the hearing, BookMyShow argued that the ticket amount had been refunded and that screening decisions were the responsibility of the theatre.
After reviewing the case, the consumer court ruled that issuing a refund alone was insufficient. It observed that informing customers about cancelled shows was the responsibility of the booking platform and termed the failure to do so a deficiency in service. The court directed BookMyShow to pay ₹10,000 as compensation for the inconvenience caused to the customer and an additional ₹2,000 towards legal expenses.
