Tamil Nadu Bans Coloured Papads

The Tamil Nadu government has banned the sale of coloured papads after food safety officials detected the presence of Rhodamine-B, a hazardous synthetic dye, in samples collected during inspections.

According to authorities, laboratory tests confirmed that some coloured papads contained the prohibited chemical, which has been linked to serious health risks, including an increased risk of cancer. The use of Rhodamine-B in food products is not permitted under food safety regulations.

The Food Safety Department has directed traders and manufacturers to immediately stop the production and sale of coloured papads containing artificial dyes. Officials warned that strict action, including sealing shops and initiating legal proceedings, will be taken against those found violating the ban.

The government has also advised consumers to remain cautious while purchasing brightly coloured food products and to avoid items suspected of containing artificial chemical dyes. Officials urged the public to report any suspected violations to the Food Safety Department.

The move is part of the state's efforts to strengthen food safety standards and protect public health. Authorities will continue inspections across Tamil Nadu to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and prevent the sale of unsafe food products.
