PIB Debunks Fake RBI Letter
The Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check unit has warned the public against a fake letter circulating on social media in the name of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The viral message falsely claims that individuals can receive ₹1 lakh from the RBI by first paying a refundable tax of ₹7,500.
PIB clarified that the claim is completely false and urged people not to fall for such fraudulent schemes. It emphasized that the RBI never asks individuals to pay processing fees, refundable taxes, or other charges in exchange for releasing money or financial benefits.
The fact-checking agency also cautioned the public against trusting letters carrying government logos without verifying their authenticity. Fraudsters often misuse the names and symbols of government institutions to deceive people into transferring money.
Citizens have been advised to verify such claims only through official government or RBI websites before taking any action. PIB urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious messages or financial scams to the appropriate authorities.
Officials stressed that awareness is the best defense against cyber fraud and financial scams. People should avoid sharing personal or banking details with unknown individuals and should ignore unsolicited messages promising large cash rewards.
