Legendary Singer S. Janaki Passes Away at 88
Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the "Nightingale of South India," passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru after battling age-related ailments. She breathed her last at Apollo Hospital, marking the end of an extraordinary musical journey that spanned nearly seven decades.
Janaki began her playback singing career in 1957 and became one of India's most celebrated voices, recording thousands of songs in more than 20 Indian languages. She was renowned for her versatility, emotional depth, and flawless vocal expressions. Her collaborations with legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and playback singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam produced countless evergreen classics cherished by generations of music lovers.
Throughout her illustrious career, S. Janaki received four National Film Awards and an unprecedented 33 State Film Awards across different languages. She was also honoured with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore. In 2013, she declined the Padma Bhushan, stating that the recognition had come too late for her lifelong contribution to Indian music.
Following the death of her husband V. Ramaprasad, Janaki spent her later years in Hyderabad while facing health issues. Her passing has left the Indian music fraternity and millions of fans in deep mourning, remembering a voice that defined generations.
