Hundreds of contract workers of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant staged a massive protest on Sunday, marching from Gajuwaka to Kurmannapalem. The workers demanded an immediate halt to the dismissal of contract employees and strongly opposed any move toward privatization of the steel plant.
The protesters raised slogans against the central government's privatization policies, emphasizing that the steel plant is the pride of Andhra Pradesh and should remain under public sector control. Union leaders accused the authorities of neglecting the interests of workers while favoring private firms.
They urged the state and central governments to intervene and protect the livelihoods of thousands of contract workers. The protest saw participation from various trade unions and political activists, highlighting growing concerns over job security and the future of the steel plant.
