Players celebrate 2011 World Cup win anniversary on social media

Tendulkar’s last ICC tournament remembered with fondness

On this day April 2, 2011, remains etched in Indian cricket history as the day the Men in Blue lifted the ODI World Cup for the second time, 28 years after their first triumph in 1983, at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. On the 14th anniversary of the iconic win, the players from the victorious squad reminisced about the emotional night through heartfelt posts on social media.

Suresh Raina reflected on the moment MS Dhoni hit the winning six, emphasizing the collective effort that led to India’s glory. “I still get goosebumps thinking about that iconic moment when @msdhoni hit that six! But it wasn't just about one person, it was a team effort!” he wrote.

Virender Sehwag acknowledged the difficulty of achieving the feat, stating, “42 years now and 2 World Cups. Shows how difficult it is and what a significant day it was for all of us to make the dream come true.”

Yuvraj Singh, named Player of the Tournament, dedicated the win to Sachin Tendulkar, who was playing his last ICC tournament. “We played to give him the moment he deserved. 14 years later, the memory of India’s win still gives me goosebumps,” he expressed.

Sri Lanka set a challenging target of 275, with Mahela Jayawardene scoring a classy 103*. Despite losing Sachin Tendulkar early, Gautam Gambhir (97) and MS Dhoni (91*) led India to a memorable victory. The celebrations that followed extended into the morning, marking one of the greatest days in Indian cricket history.
