Telangana Govt Sanctions ₹156 Crore for Free Electricity Scheme

₹156.56 crore released for Gruha Jyothi scheme in March

Scheme provides up to 200 units of free electricity per month

Telangana records an all-time high power demand of 17,162 MW

The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹156.56 crore for the implementation of the Gruha Jyothi scheme, ensuring free electricity for domestic consumers up to 200 units per month. This allocation is part of the ₹1,612.12 crore budget earmarked for the 2024–25 financial year.

As per Government Order Rt. No: 10, issued by the Energy Department on March 24, the funds have been released to Telangana DISCOMs, including the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL). With this approval, eligible households will receive zero electricity bills.

The sanctioned amount includes ₹118.99 crore under the general category, ₹23.48 crore under the Backward Classes (BC) sub-plan, and ₹14.09 crore under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) sub-plan. The funds were approved following a request from TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui, IAS, for an advance payment to cover March expenses.

The allocation comes as Telangana experiences a record-breaking power demand of 17,162 MW in March, reflecting a sharp rise in electricity consumption across sectors.
