India’s First Three-Coach Metro Line Coming Up in Delhi by 2028

DMRC to introduce 3-coach train corridor between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block

8-km stretch part of Phase IV; targets short-distance urban mobility

New system aims for higher frequency, lower cost, and better efficiency

In a pioneering move, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that it will launch India’s first metro corridor designed specifically for three-coach train operations by 2028. The new line, which falls under Phase IV of the metro expansion project, will run between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block, spanning 8 kilometers and making it the second-smallest corridor in the Delhi Metro network.

Unlike the traditional 4, 6, or 8-coach trains seen on most metro lines, this three-coach configuration is a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at providing a future-ready and cost-efficient solution to urban mobility challenges. The shorter train system is being introduced with short-distance commuters in mind, optimizing frequency and reducing operational costs without compromising passenger capacity.

Each coach will be capable of accommodating about 300 passengers, providing a total capacity of nearly 900 passengers per trip. The decision to introduce shorter trains is backed by Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic (PHPDT) studies, which suggest the projected ridership can be comfortably managed with a smaller configuration.

The corridor will include eight stations, enhancing connectivity between key residential and commercial zones in South Delhi. Officials added that this model is expected to offer economic sustainability while maintaining the high standards of Delhi Metro’s urban transit system.

By tailoring train length to specific passenger needs, the DMRC aims to set a new benchmark for efficient metro operations across the country.
