We Will Encourage Private Universities: Minister Lokesh

Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh announced that private universities will be encouraged in Andhra Pradesh. Introducing the Private Universities Establishment and Regulation Second Amendment Bill-2025 in the Legislative Assembly, Lokesh emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding quality education. The bill was passed in the House.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Lokesh stated, "Centurion University has been brought into the state, but there were technical challenges. We aim to promote private sector universities and have already explored the greenfield model. However, when we considered recognizing VVIT as a private university under the brownfield model, we were advised to ensure compliance with central and state regulations."

He highlighted that VVIT has 50 acres of land, a built-up area of 4,75,278 sq. ft., centers of excellence, incubator centers, 11 UG and PG courses, 700 staff members, and around 9,200 students. The institution has expressed readiness for significant investment and requested conversion into VVITU (VVIT University) under the 2016 Act.

"Whenever a new university is established, an amendment to the Act is required in the Legislature to include its name," Lokesh explained. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to strengthening higher education through regulatory support and policy amendments.
