PM Modi Calls for ‘Mutual Sensitivity’ in Ties with Dhaka

Amid ongoing tensions in India-Bangladesh relations over violence against minorities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus and the people of Bangladesh on their National Day, March 26. In his message, Modi emphasized the need for strengthening bilateral ties through mutual sensitivity to each other’s concerns.

Recent months have seen a rise in violence against minorities in Bangladesh, causing diplomatic challenges. According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, over 2,374 incidents targeting minority communities were reported between August 2024 and February 2025. These developments have heightened concerns in India regarding the safety of minorities in the neighboring country.

Despite these challenges, Modi’s message reaffirmed the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations. He noted that Bangladesh’s National Day is a time to reflect on shared sacrifices and the foundation of India-Bangladesh relations. “We remain committed to advancing this partnership, driven by our common aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity, and based on mutual sensitivity to each other’s interests and concerns,” Modi stated.

India has consistently called on Bangladesh to ensure the protection of minority communities and take necessary measures to prevent communal violence. While tensions persist, Modi’s message signals India’s intent to maintain constructive engagement with Dhaka, focusing on diplomatic cooperation and regional stability.
