Retaliatory tariffs on India to take effect from April 2.
US President Donald Trump has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very smart leader” and a “great friend” during discussions at the White House. His remarks come amid ongoing trade talks between India and the US, with retaliatory tariffs on India set to take effect from April 2.
Trump noted that discussions between the two nations are progressing well and are expected to yield positive results. However, he described India as one of the countries imposing the highest tariffs, calling the situation "cruel and very cruel."
He emphasized his rapport with Modi, stating that they communicate effectively whenever they meet. According to Trump, this relationship has played a role in enhancing the ongoing trade negotiations.
In related developments, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landa on Friday. The talks, held as US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch visits India, covered trade, defense, technology, and migration, with hopes of finalizing a mutually beneficial agreement.
