PM Modi Receives Grand Ceremonial Welcome in Colombo
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square on Saturday, marking the beginning of his State Visit to Sri Lanka. He was received by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, making Modi the first foreign leader to be hosted by the new Sri Lankan President.
This visit marks PM Modi’s fourth trip to Sri Lanka since 2014 and the first since President Dissanayake assumed office. The ceremonial event was attended by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and top cabinet members. Modi arrived in Colombo from Bangkok, following his participation in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.
Despite heavy rains, large crowds of Sri Lankans and Indian diaspora members lined the streets, extending a warm welcome. Top Sri Lankan ministers including Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa greeted him at the airport.
On X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Colombo. Grateful to the ministers and dignitaries who welcomed me at the airport. Looking forward to the programmes in Sri Lanka.”
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasised the depth of India-Sri Lanka ties rooted in history, culture, and shared values, describing Sri Lanka as integral to India's Neighbourhood First policy. He highlighted India’s crucial assistance during Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis and reiterated support for mutual development.
During the visit, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging talks with President Dissanayake, review bilateral progress, and witness the signing of agreements in energy, health, digitisation, and defence. On Sunday, he will visit Anuradhapura to inaugurate India-assisted development projects and pay respects at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi temple.
The leaders will also discuss the long-standing Indian fishermen issue, focusing on early release and humanitarian treatment. PM Modi is scheduled to return to New Delhi on April 6.
