Russia and India are working to elevate their bilateral relationship to unprecedented heights, with Russian President Vladimir Putin set to visit India soon, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. In a televised address, Lavrov confirmed that preparations are underway for the highly anticipated visit, although he refrained from disclosing the exact dates.
Lavrov highlighted that this visit would be reciprocal, as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first foreign trip to Russia after being re-elected for a third consecutive term. He noted that now it was Russia's turn to reciprocate the gesture. During his visit to Russia last year, Prime Minister Modi had invited President Putin for an official state visit, which Putin has accepted. The visit is expected to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
This will be President Putin's first trip to India since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The visit holds significant importance, as it will likely push forward Russia’s "new economic roadmap" for 2030, which aims to enhance bilateral cooperation. India and Russia have set a target to double their annual trade to over $100 billion, a considerable increase from the current trade volume of around $60 billion.
A critical component of this growing partnership is the expansion of trade routes, particularly through the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime trade corridor. This initiative will ensure fresh supplies from Russia to India, strengthening the economic ties between the two nations.
Lavrov also emphasized that Russia is focused on redefining its relationship with India, aiming to develop a "special and privileged strategic partnership." This vision seeks to expand cooperation beyond traditional spheres, fostering greater collaboration in various sectors. The upcoming visit by President Putin is expected to be a key moment in cementing this enhanced partnership, marking a new chapter in Russia-India relations.
