Cooperative Taxi Service to Boost Drivers’ Income, Improve Services: Centre
The Union government has announced plans to launch a cooperative taxi service aimed at enhancing the income of drivers and providing better services to consumers. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, highlighted the initiative during a discussion on the Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha.
The cooperative model is designed to ensure democratic management by active participation of all members, with profits distributed equitably among the members of the cooperative taxi society. The registration of two-wheelers, taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheelers will be facilitated under this model, ensuring that profits go directly to the drivers.
Based on the principles of “Sahakar se Samriddhi,” the initiative aims to improve the income, working conditions, and standard of living for taxi drivers, while ensuring better quality services for consumers. The government believes that a cooperative approach will promote financial inclusion, self-reliance, and rural development.
India currently hosts over 8 lakh cooperative societies serving nearly 30 crore members across 30 sectors. Successful cooperative models such as Amul have demonstrated the potential for inclusive growth and equitable profit-sharing.
The new cooperative taxi service is expected to function under the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act for societies operating in multiple states and under state-specific cooperative laws for others.
