Trump-Modi Call Discusses White House Visit and Strategic Ties
Washington, Jan 28: A White House visit for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the key topics discussed during a phone call between President Donald Trump and PM Modi on Monday. The conversation also covered significant geopolitical issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, West Asia, and Europe, as well as the Quad, which includes India, the US, Japan, and Australia.
According to a statement from the White House, President Trump emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and working toward a balanced bilateral trading relationship. The discussion underscored the strength of the U.S.-India partnership and plans for advancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Quad framework.
PM Modi expressed his optimism for strengthening ties in a post on X (formerly Twitter):
"Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security."
The White House described the call as “productive,” highlighting discussions on expanding cooperation and confirming plans for PM Modi to visit the White House. Though details about the visit remain undisclosed, reports suggest February as a potential timeline.
The two leaders have maintained a strong personal rapport since President Trump’s first term. Notable events include the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston in 2019 and Trump’s visit to India for the “Namaste Trump” rally in Gujarat in 2020.
President Trump and PM Modi are expected to meet in person later this year, possibly during the Quad Leaders’ Summit in India, marking a key moment in advancing the strategic Indo-Pacific partnership.
High-Level Representation at Trump’s Inauguration
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented India at President Trump’s second-term inauguration last week. Jaishankar engaged with high-profile guests, including tech leaders Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Sundar Pichai, during associated events. He also held bilateral discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, strengthening ties ahead of Quad ministerial meetings.
The conversation between the two leaders reflects a mutual commitment to deepening ties across trade, security, and regional cooperation.
