Pakistan Ends WTC Campaign with Disastrous Performance

Multan, Jan 28: Pakistan's ICC World Test Championship (WTC) campaign for the 2023–25 cycle ended in disappointment after a 120-run defeat against the West Indies in the second Test in Multan.

The loss marked a historic win for the West Indies, their first on Pakistani soil in 34 years, as the two-match series concluded in a 1-1 draw. The West Indies' last victory in Pakistan was in Faisalabad in November 1990. Despite several subsequent tours in 1997 and 2006, they had failed to secure wins until now.

Pakistan's performance in this WTC cycle has been its worst, finishing at the bottom of the points table. Out of 14 matches, Pakistan managed to win only five while losing nine, ending with a points percentage of 27.89. This marks a significant decline from their earlier performances in the WTC.

  • Inaugural WTC Cycle (2019–21): Pakistan won 3 out of 6 matches with a points percentage of 43.3.
  • Second Cycle (2021–23): They secured 4 wins from 12 matches, ending with a points percentage of 38.1, placing them seventh.
  • Current Cycle (2023–25): Pakistan dropped to the bottom with a mere 5 wins from 14 matches and a points percentage of 27.89.

Currently, South Africa tops the WTC points table with a percentage of 69.44, followed by Australia at 63.73 and India at 50. The sharp decline in Pakistan's performance highlights major issues in their Test setup, with the team struggling to maintain consistency against both strong and mid-tier opponents.

This dismal campaign calls for significant introspection within Pakistan's cricketing framework as they look to rebuild and perform better in future Test series.
