Maha Kumbh Stampede: PM Modi Speaks to CM Yogi, Monitors Situation Closely
New Delhi, Jan 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath twice within an hour to assess the stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Wednesday. Modi emphasized the need for immediate relief measures and assured the state government of full support.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President & Health Minister J.P. Nadda also spoke with CM Yogi, offering volunteers and medical services to manage the crisis effectively.
The stampede-like situation emerged as millions of devotees gathered for the ‘Amrit Snan’ on Mauni Amavasya. The massive crowd caused barricades to collapse, leading to chaos and injuries.
At least 30 women sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals within the Kumbh fairgrounds. Critically injured individuals were transferred to Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College for urgent treatment.
Eyewitnesses described panic and suffocation as devotees were trapped in the rush. Authorities implemented a crowd diversion plan, temporarily halting devotee entry into the city. CM Yogi urged pilgrims to bathe at nearby ghats instead of heading towards Triveni Sangam.
The Amrit Snan holds immense spiritual significance, particularly due to the rare 'Triveni Yog' celestial event, which occurs once every 144 years. Security measures have now been intensified to prevent further mishaps.
