15 Killed in Stampede at Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh

A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has led to the tragic deaths of 15 devotees, with authorities fearing the toll may rise. The incident occurred on Mauni Amavasya, a sacred day when thousands gathered at the Sangam to take a holy dip.

The chaos was triggered when barricades collapsed due to an overwhelming crowd, leading to panic and a rush among pilgrims.

Several others sustained serious injuries and have been rushed to Swaroop Rani Hospital for treatment. Emergency services, including 70 ambulances, responded swiftly to the scene. Among the deceased, several are reported to be women.

The Kumbh Mela has been witnessing record-breaking crowds, with 55 million pilgrims taking a dip just a day before the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought details from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and has assured full support. Following the tragedy, 13 Akharas have announced the cancellation of the Mauni Amavasya Amrit Snan, citing safety concerns.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the barricade collapse and have pledged enhanced security measures to prevent further mishaps.
