Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

TPN ,New Delhi: Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away at the age of 92 after being admitted to AIIMS Delhi due to a serious illness. He was under treatment in the emergency department and breathed his last as his condition deteriorated.  

Dr. Manmohan Singh, a senior Congress leader and distinguished economist, served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, leading the UPA-1 and UPA-2 governments. Known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern financial institutions.  

Born on September 26, 1932, in Pakistan (pre-partition), Singh’s family migrated to India during the partition. Over a long and illustrious career, he served as the Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao (1991-1996), introducing transformative Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization (LPG) reforms that steered India towards economic progress.  

Dr. Singh also served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982-1985), Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, and Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). A Rajya Sabha member for 33 years, he was the Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004.  

Among his many accolades, Dr. Singh was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, the Euromoney Award for Best Finance Minister (1993 and 1994), and the World Statesman Award in 2010. In 2017, he received the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development.  

He is survived by his wife, Gurusharan Kaur, and three daughters—Upinder, Daman, and Amrit Singh. Dr. Manmohan Singh will be remembered as a statesman, a visionary economist, and a humble leader who left an indelible mark on India’s history.
