The incident took place outside a security checkpoint in Terminal 4 around 9:45 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
According to Phoenix police, officers responded to a call about a possible shooting at a restaurant in the terminal. Upon arrival, they found three people with gunshot wounds and a fourth individual with a stab wound in a nearby airport parking area. A woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while three men were reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators later determined that the altercation began when a group of individuals became involved in a physical confrontation. During the altercation, one person pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, injuring several people. Police confirmed that all parties involved were known to each other.
At least two individuals were detained in connection with the incident. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego condemned the violence, calling it a "domestic violence incident" that "has no place in our city, especially during the holidays."
In a separate incident on Christmas night, a man in Houston, Texas, shot three children whom he accused of attempting to rob him at gunpoint. The boys, aged between 12 and 14, were reportedly shot after they tried to rob the man at an apartment complex in northwestern Houston.
