Parvesh Verma Vs Atishi
Delhi Assembly Witnesses Uproar After BJP MLA Verma's Comment on Atishi
The Delhi Assembly was rocked by a massive uproar on Thursday afternoon after BJP MLA Parvesh Verma made a controversial comment about AAP's Leader of Opposition, Atishi, during the Question Hour. The incident occurred when Mr. Verma, the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, was answering a question on the financial support provided by the government for pilgrimage schemes.
Verma highlighted that in the previous financial year, the Delhi government's Chief Minister's Pilgrimage Scheme had allocated Rs 80 crore, but shockingly, zero rupees were spent, suggesting that the scheme was merely for publicity. His remarks were met with interruptions from Atishi and other AAP lawmakers, who raised their concerns over the topic.
In response to the interruption, Verma made a sharp comment, saying, “Kahan se laaye ho bhai (Where did you get her from, brother),” apparently directed at Atishi. This remark immediately triggered a strong response from Atishi, who stood up and labeled Verma's language as "unparliamentary."
Defending his statement, Verma argued, "I only said 'bhai'. How is it unparliamentary?" The Speaker of the Assembly, Vijender Gupta, backed Verma's stance, further escalating the tension. As the uproar continued, the Speaker ordered the marshaling out of two AAP MLAs, Vishesh Ravi and Kuldeep Kumar, for their disruptive behavior.
Earlier in the day, Atishi had written to Speaker Gupta, raising concerns over the rejection of special mentions related to law and order issues. She questioned why discussions on the increasing crime rate in Delhi, including serious cases like rape and shootings, were being blocked in the Assembly.
Atishi's criticism highlighted her frustration with the Delhi government's refusal to address crucial issues affecting the safety and security of residents, particularly as crime in the capital continues to rise.
