Immigration bill passed in Lok Sabha, Amit Shah says India not a Dharamshala
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, stressed that while India would welcome tourists, students, and business people, it would take strict action against those who pose a threat to the nation's security. The Bill, which was passed by the Lower House, aims to strengthen national security and improve India’s immigration and foreigner tracking systems.
Shah made it clear that the Modi-led government would not tolerate individuals with malicious intentions seeking to enter the country. "Those who pose a threat to national security will not be allowed to enter the nation. The nation is not a 'dharamshala' (shelter home)," he remarked, emphasizing the government's commitment to securing the country. He further stated that people who contribute to the nation’s development, such as tourists, students, and businesspeople, would always be welcomed.
The Home Minister also addressed the issue of illegal infiltration, particularly by Rohingyas from Myanmar and Bangladeshis, who, according to him, were making India unsafe. He warned of stringent actions against infiltrators if they caused unrest within the country.
The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, proposes several provisions, including penalties for those using forged passports or visas to enter or remain in India. It also mandates that hotels, universities, and hospitals report information on foreigners staying with them, enabling authorities to track overstaying foreigners.
Under the bill, any foreigner who enters India without a valid passport or visa can face imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh, or both. The bill seeks to repeal existing legislation related to foreigners and immigration, including the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920, the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939, and the Foreigners Act, 1946.
Shah concluded his remarks by assuring the nation that the government would work tirelessly to secure India's borders and ensure the safety of its citizens.
