Former BRS MLA Shakeel was arrested by police at Shamshabad airport on Thursday morning after he returned to Hyderabad from Dubai. The arrest is linked to a 2023 road accident case involving his son, Rahel, who had reportedly fled to Dubai with his father's assistance.
Shakeel, who had been residing in Dubai for the past several months, landed in Hyderabad to attend the funeral of his mother. Police, who had prior information about his arrival, were present at the airport and took him into custody as soon as he landed.
The incident dates back to 2023, when Rahel caused a serious road accident by driving at high speed near Pragathi Bhavan. Following the incident, a case was registered by the police. However, during the investigation, it was revealed that Shakeel misled authorities and arranged for his son to flee to Dubai immediately after the accident. As a result, a case was registered against Shakeel for obstructing justice, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
After learning of the warrant, Shakeel himself fled to Dubai and had been living there since. His return to Hyderabad came in the wake of his mother's passing, and police acted swiftly based on prior intelligence of his arrival.
Reports suggest that police have granted Shakeel temporary permission to attend the funeral, but he will remain under police supervision. After the ceremonies, he is expected to be taken to the police station for further legal proceedings.
