It Will 'Work Out Very Well', Trump Says on Trade Issues with India
Trump calls Indian tariffs "brutal" but expects positive resolution
Expresses optimism about trade talks with Prime Minister Modi
US goods trade deficit with India reached $45.7 billion in 2024
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism over trade issues with India, despite labeling Indian import duties as "brutal" during a White House news conference on Friday. Speaking about ongoing trade talks, Trump stated, "I think it's going to work out very well, between India and our country."
Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump described him as "a very smart man and a great friend," emphasizing their positive relationship following recent talks at the White House.
The US goods trade deficit with India stood at $45.7 billion in 2024, marking a 5.4% increase from the previous year. Total trade between the two countries amounted to $129.2 billion in 2024, with US exports to India reaching $41.8 billion and imports from India totaling $87.4 billion.
Trump hinted at introducing a reciprocal tariff system on April 2, aligning American tariffs on imports from trading partners, but suggested there may be exemptions for certain countries.
Trade discussions were also part of a recent phone call between US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The officials reportedly discussed efforts to reduce trade barriers, enhance defense and technology collaboration, and promote regional security and prosperity.
