SC Expresses Displeasure Over CM Revanth Reddy’s Remarks
CM Revanth Reddy says no by-elections despite defections
Supreme Court questions lack of action for previous remarks on Kavitha
Justice Gavai advises restraint and warns against repeated controversial statements
The Supreme Court expressed deep displeasure over recent comments made by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, where he claimed that by-elections would not occur even if opposition MLAs defected to the Congress party. The court criticized the failure to issue a contempt notice to Revanth Reddy over his past remarks when BRS leader K. Kavitha was granted bail, suggesting that timely action could have prevented the current controversy.
A bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice A.G. Masih made these observations while hearing petitions concerning the disqualification of BRS MLAs who defected to the Congress. Senior advocate Aryama Sundaram pointed out that despite objections from a BRS MLA, Revanth Reddy continued his comments in the assembly, stating that there would be no by-elections regardless of defections.
Justice Gavai expressed disappointment, remarking that the Chief Minister should have exercised restraint, especially considering previous incidents. Addressing senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the Telangana Assembly Speaker, the court emphasized that if action had been taken against Revanth Reddy earlier, he might have refrained from making such statements again.
The bench urged all political figures to demonstrate restraint and respect towards judicial processes, regardless of their party affiliations.
