The ruling alliance in Andhra Pradesh has made significant gains in local body elections, including in Pulivendula, the home constituency of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Pulivendula, long regarded as a stronghold of the Y.S. family, has witnessed an unexpected breakthrough for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Of the municipality’s 40 wards, TDP candidates have been elected unopposed in 20. Elections are still to be held in the remaining 20 wards, along with the chairperson post.
Across the erstwhile undivided Kadapa district, alliance parties have reportedly secured six of the nine municipal chairperson or mayor posts unopposed. In Kadapa Municipal Corporation, TDP won 47 of the 66 divisions, while the BJP secured two and Jana Sena won one. Polling is scheduled for the mayor’s post and the remaining 16 divisions. In Proddatur, TDP candidates were elected unopposed in 51 of 52 wards, while a BJP candidate won the remaining ward. In Badvel, TDP secured 35 of 40 wards and Jana Sena won two. In Mydukur, TDP candidates won 17 of the 32 wards unopposed.
The alliance also secured a majority of wards unopposed in Rajampet, Kamalapuram and Yerraguntla. These developments mark a notable shift in the district’s local political landscape, which has traditionally been dominated by the YSRCP.
