Political activity in the national capital has intensified as the INDIA bloc prepares to hold a public protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The programme, initially publicised as a mock Parliament, has reportedly been renamed Jan Mahabhiyog.
The protest is scheduled to take place at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence from 3 pm to 7:30 pm. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside over the event.
Opposition parties allege that around 13.5 crore voters have been unfairly removed from electoral rolls during the revision process. They say the exercise raises concerns about voters’ rights and the independence of the electoral system. Nineteen INDIA bloc parties are expected to participate.
Kharge is expected to deliver the opening address, while Rahul Gandhi will give the concluding speech. Each speaker will reportedly be allotted five minutes. People who claim to have lost their voting rights, along with civil society representatives, are also expected to share their experiences.
The programme is intended to bring the opposition’s concerns about the Election Commission and voter-list revisions into the national spotlight.
