Even hours after the announcement of the Andhra Pradesh municipal election results, political discussions continue to gain momentum. Although the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance secured victories across several municipalities, rebel and independent candidates gave major parties a tough fight in some areas. Several dissatisfied leaders who were denied tickets during alliance seat-sharing arrangements entered the contest independently and registered unexpected victories. The performance of a Jana Sena rebel candidate in Adoni Municipality, Kurnool district, has emerged as a major talking point across the state.
As part of the alliance seat-sharing arrangement, the Adoni municipal chairperson’s post was allotted to the TDP, which fielded Nagamani as its candidate. In response, Jana Sena Adoni constituency in-charge Mallappa Nayakar fielded his wife, Swapna Mallappa Nayakar, as an independent candidate.
In a closely contested election, Swapna emerged victorious and secured the chairperson’s post, creating a political sensation. Following her victory, her husband Mallappa Nayakar told the media that they would dedicate the win to Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, adding that Pawan had always supported him.
The impact of independent candidates was also visible in other parts of Andhra Pradesh. In Pithapuram Municipality, represented by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, independents won 10 of the total 36 wards.
In Gollaprolu, which falls under the Pithapuram constituency, four rebel candidates contested as independents and won four wards. Of them, two were associated with Jana Sena and two with the TDP.
Similarly, around eight independent candidates won in the Eluru municipal elections, demonstrating their electoral strength.
The success of rebel candidates across party lines has opened up new political equations at the local level. Independent candidates have not only won councillor positions but have also secured key municipal leadership posts. Their performance has raised interest in how these victories could influence local political dynamics in the coming days.
