Korean Bakery Products Hit $440 Million in Exports, Set New Record

South Korea’s culinary influence has expanded far beyond its traditional staples like kimchi and ramyeon, with its bakery-related exports reaching new heights. In 2023, the country’s bakery exports hit a record $440 million, reflecting the rising global demand for Korean snacks, pies, and innovative treats like steamed buns and fish-shaped pastries. This surge in exports highlights the growing international appetite for Korean cuisine, fueled in part by the global wave of K-pop and K-drama.

The popularity of Korean food products, particularly in markets like the United States, China, and Japan, is becoming a defining feature of South Korea's culinary export success. According to the Korea Customs Service, the export value of bakery-related products surged by 8.3% in the January-November period, compared to the same period in the previous year. This marks a significant achievement for the country, as bakery items are now a central part of South Korea’s food export sector.

Products like Korean-style pastries and snacks have gained international recognition for their unique flavors and textures, setting them apart in the competitive global market. Among these, fish-shaped pastries and traditional steamed buns have attracted attention for their innovative presentation and delicious fillings, often combining sweet or savory flavors in unexpected ways.

As Korean culture continues to gain global influence through the worldwide popularity of K-pop idols and K-drama series, the appetite for Korean food is also growing. This cultural phenomenon has paved the way for Korean products to gain traction in international markets, transforming the food export industry into a vital part of the country’s economy.

The record export figures signal that South Korean food products are no longer a niche market but are becoming increasingly mainstream. As global interest in Korean cuisine continues to rise, it’s likely that the country’s bakery industry will continue to thrive, introducing more of its delicious and innovative treats to food lovers around the world.
