Uncertainty has emerged over Andhra Pradesh’s urban local body elections following Supreme Court directions concerning complaints of obstruction during the nomination process. The Court directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to defer publication of the final candidates’ list until October 25 and examine complaints, videos and other evidence before deciding whether nomination deadlines should be extended. If an extension is granted, affected candidates must receive at least 48 additional hours.
Following the developments, the SEC initially halted further election activities across all 100 urban local bodies. However, according to subsequent reports, the election process is being treated differently in affected areas. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha reportedly said polls would proceed as scheduled in areas outside 19 municipalities across seven districts, where the complaints require further consideration.
The developments have intensified political discussions across the state. The SEC’s examination of complaints and its decisions on nomination deadlines will determine the next steps in the affected municipalities. The Supreme Court’s directions are aimed at addressing allegations of obstruction while ensuring that the election process remains fair and transparent.
