The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has put forth several demands aimed at enhancing the working conditions and rights of gig workers in the state. In their proposal, the union emphasizes the need for transparency, accountability, and better safety measures for gig workers.
According to a report reviewed by Siasat.com, the TGPWU urges digital platforms to ensure transparency and fairness in algorithmic management, particularly concerning decisions on rates, incentives, and penalties. Additionally, the union calls for an end to the deplorable working conditions faced by gig workers, advocating for responsive channels for accident compensation and a firm commitment to worker safety.
From the government, the union demands legislation similar to the Rajasthan Platform-based Gig Workers Act 2023, which extends social security to gig and platform workers and establishes a regulatory framework for platform companies.
The TGPWU’s efforts have yielded significant benefits for workers in the past. These include subsidies for converting diesel vehicles to electric ones, promises from political parties to pass laws for the welfare of gig workers, loan moratoriums, tax waivers, and improved working conditions negotiated with cab aggregators.
The union’s advocacy highlights the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges faced by gig workers and underscores the need for collaboration between worker organizations, digital platforms, and the government to ensure fair and safe working conditions for all.
