Tensions between North and South Korea have escalated recently, not only in rhetoric but also in a bizarre balloon war. South Korean airports have faced significant disruptions due to North Korean balloons filled with garbage, including animal and human waste.
In a provocative exchange, South Korean activists launched balloons containing anti-Kim pamphlets and Western music cassettes into North Korea. In retaliation, North Korea has been sending balloons into South Korea, often filled with refuse. This unusual tactic has led to serious operational issues for South Korean airports, with several closures reported due to debris on runways.
Icheon Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, experienced a six-hour closure due to these incidents since June 1. On Monday, the airport was temporarily shut down for approximately an hour and a half as authorities dealt with the fallout from the balloons. Lawmakers, including Democratic Party member Young Bo Nam, highlighted that these disruptions require planes to carry additional fuel for potential delays and route diversions, further complicating air travel.
Since late May, North Korea is estimated to have sent around 5,500 trash-filled balloons into South Korea, with some even landing in sensitive areas, including the compound of the South Korean President’s residence. As the situation unfolds, it remains a unique and concerning chapter in the ongoing tensions between the two Koreas.
