Romelu Lukaku continued to impress for Napoli, scoring once and providing two assists in a commanding 3-1 victory over Como on Friday. This win allowed Napoli to maintain its position at the top of the Serie A table for at least another week. Lukaku set the tone early by assisting Scott McTominay just 25 seconds into the match, marking the latter’s first goal in Italy’s top flight. He later converted a penalty seven minutes after halftime, before assisting David Neres, helping Napoli extend its lead to four points.
With Juventus trailing closely behind, they have a chance to narrow the gap to just one point if they win their upcoming match against Cagliari. Since joining Napoli under coach Antonio Conte, Lukaku has made an immediate impact, scoring three goals and providing four assists in five league appearances, demonstrating his readiness to help the team challenge for the title.
“It’s going to take time because I got here late, but it’s all thanks to my teammates, coaching staff, and fans that we’re doing so well,” Lukaku said in an interview with Sky.
The match at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona wasn’t without challenges, as Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, equalized before halftime with a stunning long-range effort from Gabriel Strefezza. Como threatened to upset the game further when Nico Paz hit the woodwork. However, Lukaku’s assist for Neres’ late goal in the 86th minute sealed the victory.
McTominay, who has quickly become a key player since his summer transfer from Manchester United, praised the team’s quick start and acknowledged the tactical adjustments made during halftime. “It was great to get off to a good start. We want to play football and win as many games as we can,” he stated.
Napoli remains unbeaten since their opening-day loss to Verona, looking to regain their dominant form from their 2023 Scudetto-winning season. Como, in their first Serie A season in over two decades, currently sits 10th with eight points.
